An anal fissure is a painful tearing of the anal canal that may be caused by strong pressure in connection with a contracted sphincter muscle. In the early stages, the treatment with a pain-relieving, muscle-relaxing ointment is often successful. If there is already scarring around the fissure, the operative excision under anesthesia is often the only possible treatment.
